Chapter Thirteen

Tessa came down late to breakfast on Friday morning, strangely rested from a very short night of sleep, to find that Ronan and Drew had left some time earlier in order to be waiting on the steps of the Benton County courthouse when it opened. Carol, meanwhile, had arranged to begin the enrollment process for Rafe and Ilona with a private Christian school in Centerton, about a twenty-minute drive away. Meanwhile, they and Selene would undergo testing at a private educational facility that provided one-on-one tutoring to determine where they each stood academically and strive to bring them up to speed with children of similar ages.

“We got to go to school over the holidays?” Rafe whined.

“You have to go to school over the holidays,” Carol calmly corrected, “but it won’t be like real school, and it won’t be on the actual holidays. Besides, it seems to me that you’ve been on a very long school holiday for some months now. Time to go to work.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he reluctantly agreed.

Carol gave him a half-smile and a mildly admonishing look. “I believe your father said something about respectful address this morning, didn’t he?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Rafe replied meekly.

Carol hugged him. “You are the most amazing boy. I love you very much.”

Rafe hugged her back and went to join the girls in counting gifts under the Christmas tree again.

“It’s like God gift-wrapped a son and daughter and gave them to us for Christmas,” she said to Tessa, setting a plate of sweet rolls, fruit, and ham in front of her. “I can’t believe how much progress they’ve made in such a short time, but I know they need expert help. We’ve arranged counseling with a highly recommended Christian psychologist. For Selene, too. They’ve all been through so much.”

“When will Selene join her aunt and uncle?”

“After they’ve been relocated. Middle of January, I should think, so about a month.”

“Do you know where they will go?”

Carol shook her head. “We haven’t been told that. But wherever they go, Selene will be provided for. Drew has already set up trusts for all the children.”

“Trusts?”

“Trust funds. He’s very good at that sort of thing. Setting aside sums, making sure they’re protected and grow. She won’t do without, and she’ll be able to go to college if she wants.”

Tessa required a moment to get her mouth closed so she could speak again. “He’d do that for her?”

“He’d do it for all the world’s children if he could. I can’t tell you how happy it makes him.” She poured herself another cup of coffee and carried it back to the island. “I know you think we spend a lot of money, Tessa, but we’re really quite frugal. We could spend millions on cars and houses alone—and have little left to do good in the world, but we already have a lovely home that meets our every need, and a good life together. And when God brings us a need to fulfill, we’re able to do that with great joy.”

“Carol,”
